OC - Lunar Mythology (1996)

Any system receives its energy from an outer source. According to some recent theories (eg prof. Michio Kaku) our Universe could be then just a fragment inside another universe, contained by a bigger one and so on ...
Is there an end to this mechanism ?

1 - Life!

Theory of Colours

When universes, wandering into nothingness, collide, the impact is terrible. As they join, their energies combine and are equally redistributed.
This causes a flow of current into the colour generators, distributed in three levels, each containing a primary colour: yellow, cyan and magenta.
The level of yellow, the first level, is the most important one: it controls the flow of energy into the two successive levels. When a huge amount of energy, such as that produced by the collision of two universes, enters the first level, it is stored and gradually redistributed: in the form of colour yellow it enters the second level - cyan - where all the nuances from yellow to cyan, including colour green, spread out from. By the going out from the third level, the complete visible spectrum has been obtained.
What we see are the colours, which are energy; energy is life: it is without beginning, without end; thoughts and actions alternate in a continuous loop, called the Ring. Inside this, consisting of colours, the shades follow each other and no separation can be detected. Thus, life, made up of colours, is endless.
This is the Theory of Colours, also called the Theory of Eternal Life.
The energy, now transformed into light, spreads out from a split inside the energy field, called "the Fountain of Colours".
As it floods everything, the colour-flow embodies what our senses can perceive.
And it is exactly a Fountain of Colours the witness of a beautiful story, of a distant planet, of fascinating civilizations, unknown gods, heroes and sages such as no one has ever heard about.

2 - Mo-Mo

"Nowhere else you'll see any city more beautiful than the round Mo-Mo white paradise".
With this sentence, it opens the account of the events regarding the history of Mo-Mo; it was compiled, over the centuries, by the Observers, mythical figures, to whom is linked the succession of the presented events.
The round city of Mo-Mo stood in a beautiful place, on a remote planet. Perched onto a high white cliff, it dominated over a huge plain in the West .
The yellow colour of the grass impacted far away onto the deep blue of an imposing mountain range, which surrounded the plain from North to South. In the East, the sea, vast, deep, eerie, coloured in intense purple.
Between the cliffs and the sea, one last descriptive note. An unfathomable abyss, dark, sombre and menacing, in which the sight gets lost as the origins of Mo-Mo are lost in the dark of the ages.

3 - The White Messiah

Contending for the civilization preeminence there were, on a planet, two peoples.
Beyond the purple sea, at East, there lived some beings who said themselves generated by one of the major moons of their sky, Fat Moon.
These beings were unhappy, "nothing they knew but fate and deathe" comment the Observers.
The desert, immense and spectral, in which they lived, was a sad place, which every day challenged their hearts.
But they also were sensitive and intelligent beings and the curiosity that tormented their souls, the need of something more that burned in their spirits, materialized into the feature of the White Messiah.
Son of Fat Moon, he had come among his people "to lead it to the place where life springs from the earth" becoming their king.
So these people began their journey to the promised land. Running after their moon and the Messiah, overcoming difficulties and hardships, they arrived after many months at the purple sea.
Having never seen before what they called a "liquid earth", no one had any idea how to cross it and they prayed the Messiah for a help from heaven to be sent.
Fat Moon then sent to his son and to his people another gift, a daughter of hers, White Moon. Crowded together on the beach, these ones who had been generated by Fat Moon, the mother of the Good Moons and who therefore were called the Good Ones, saw coming towards them a white sickle gently parting the waters, which stood onto the beach and received the people into her stomach. With the Messiah as the helmsman, the Good Ones crossed the sea and finally came to the white cliffs.
Hovering like a butterfly, the moon took off from the purple expanse, flew over the dreadful abyss, deposited the people onto the yellow plain and vanished into the thin air.
Later, the Good Ones celebrated their deed, frescoing part of the cliff, depicting their adventures during the exodus. This monument was called "Wall of Paintings".

4 - The Green Messiah

Fat Moon had a sister, Bad Moon. They were daughters of Old Sun, one of the Four Stars. He had assigned to each of his daughters a half of the planet, so that they governed it and they had nurtured there their children.
But the sisters, disobedient, rather than living in peace, each respecting the other one's domains, constantly were in conflict with each other and often trespassed.
So the Good Ones and the Bad Ones knew the existence of each other, as some used to see in the round Fat Moon and some others in the terrible winged sickle, the matriarch of a people similar to them.
Old Sun then decided to punish his daughters: he upset the planet's climate, which had always been healthy, transforming it into a desert and sentenced the two peoples to gather into just one place and to contend for the dominion of it.
Simultaneously with the Good Ones then, under another sky, the people of Bad Moon, mother of the Bad Moons, began his journey.
The Bad Ones found themselves in the same conditions of the Good Ones and therefore their moon sent the Green Messiah "for him to be the first one with his people to reach the destined place".
But such apparently similar peoples also had similar difficulties. Coming from the West, the Bad Ones arrived at the barrier of the blue mountains; the Green Messiah called his mother to send him aid. She sent a daughter of hers, Armed Moon, which they saw as a lunate shield, carrying a spear. Armed Moon came down from heaven and hurled a war-hammer several times against the rock wall, until she broke through. Having accomplished her task also, this warrior from the sky came back there, close to her mother.
Some time after, the Bad Ones, in order to glorify their mother, carved their deeds near the breach and called that place "Wall of the Flying Hammers".

5 - The fountain

Theory of the Opposite Universes

The cycle of life, defined the Ring, is composed of all the colour nuances. Every shade, every singular slice of the Ring corresponds to the energy released as light from the color generator; the produced color is therefore the total energy of a universe.
Many universes with the same energy are contained in a sphere, the vacuum cell, which represents the fundamental element of a subsequent universe, with a higher level of energy.
By following the round shape of the Ring, this theory makes the largest items to coincide with the smallest ones, the universes to match with the fundamental elements of matter, and it is therefore called "Theory of opposite Universes".
Inside the Universe in which the events in question are taking place, the energy was transferred from the generators in the form of violet light.
This was the colour of the sky and of the sea of the planet.
The fountain of colours was located, invisible, on the white cliffs. The flow of colours stemmed from it, forming a dome inside which everything was illuminated.
The boundaries of that dome reached the mountains on one hand and beyond the sea on the other one, so that when the Good Ones arrived onto the shore; and the Bad Ones had crossed the blue mountains, not only they realized they had almost reached their goal, but also they had always lived in the shadows.
Gently ferried from White Moon or running through the yellow grass, the two peoples were getting closer to their fate.

6 - The Aces

Bad Moon, worried about the fate of her people, had created the Green Messiah as the twin of the White Messiah, so that when the Good Ones and the Bad Ones had met, instead of fighting, they get convinced they were similar ones, they joined their peoples and founded a city around the Fountain of Colours. For peoples whose lives were so depending on the astral will, it became necessary to establish a caste of priests who always scrutinized the celestial events. The first Observers were the Messiah who, as sons of the sky, they best would have understood the meaning of the divine actions.
Since they were twins they were called "the Aces" and a castle was built for them right upon the Fountain. The castle, made of white marble from the cliffs, had a single, very high tower, the Observatory, on the top of which the Axes used to sit outstretched and see what was going on among their gods.
The Aces moreover arranged the rules according to which the later Observers should have continued their work.
They subdivided the sky into two hemispheres, East and West, corresponding to the lunar generations and defined three reading levels: an empty sky, the Black Sky, which made clear the display of the astral figures "for always clear to had been the how"; a mapped one, with names and areas, the Astronomical Sky "for clear to had been the where".
The Meteors Sky showed the imbalances of the energy fields: if two celestial entities had faced, the highest voltage areas among these would have turned into red colour. As the energy would have grown in tension, the red area would have become increasingly defined, up to reach a spherical shape.
The sphere of tension, called Meteor, was then used by one or the other of the contenders to hit the opponent, weakening its power.
In addition to the three levels of reading, there was a so-called Starry Sky or Pure Sky, the only one into which the demarcation between the two hemispheres had been visible. It made possible to control each event.
Each sky could not have been analyzed for more than nine minutes; the principle was, each grid to be complete: the rapid and constant succession of these would have given more accurate information on the what, how, where and when. This rule was called the "law of the nine minutes per place".
Visible only to the Observers, the grids could have been changed by lifting a finger to the sky. The sky would have immediately changed under their eyes.

7 - O C

Fat Moon, round and smiling, represented the abundance. She had four children, but only two of them were known to his people: Maternal Spleen consisted of a divine mother-child couple, the green son lying on the belly of the yellow mother, forming a geometrical scythe.
A coarse-shaped crescent, with an aquiline nose and a squat chin, Country Moon symbolized the fertility of the earth. After the punishment by Old Sun, it had abandoned the now arid areas to settle in the fertile yellow plain.
White Moon was a messenger. From above the sky she would have informed his people of their mother's decisions.
Like White Moon, even the eldest son of Fat Moon was met by the Good Ones upon the sea, suspended over the purple waves. With a cerulean color complexion and a long and green curly beard, this horns-upwarded sickle was called Marine Moon.
The terrible Bad Moon, although beloved by her people, represented the betrayal and the violence. She was a yellow sickle with two butterfly wings and two long horns sticking forward out from the upper cusp. Her mouth always assumed an evil laugh. She had procreated three daughters on her own: Crazy Moon was similar in appearance to her mother, but with unusual particulars, like balls on the top of the horns, red wings like a creature from hell and a pointed tail. Instead of the maternal mouth she had a single and big eye, always wide open.
Enigmatic and mysterious was instead Blue Moon, with a red mouth. Together with Crazy Moon, when the two nations decided to live in a city, she went hidden into the abyss, constantly lurking.
Armed Moon had a fiery and irascible spirit, like a stormy sea. Her destiny would have been that to fight and to eventually die under the shots of another celestial warrior: Bad Sun, the violent star.
Since the lunar generations were two, they became represented by the Aces with two symbols: "O", Fat Moon and the Good Moons; and "C", Bad Moon with her daughters.

8 - The stars

Four main stars were into the sky: two white, one orange and one red; the latter was the bearded Old Sun, the father, as well as of the two mother moons, of the other three stars.
The white stars were two inauspicious stars: Crazy Sun was a sphere with six spokes and a very weird eye.
False Sun, bearer of bad omens, was the son of Bad Moon and of a brother of Old Sun, Blue Sun. This one had raped the daughter of Old Sun when she was still young. Then, a hybrid being was born, half sun and half moon, which for this was also called False Moon. Old Sun killed his brother and took the little False Sun with him, so that Bad Moon could forget the trauma, but the pain had already changed the heart of that timid daughter.
The youngest, brave and intrepid son of Old Sun was the fiery Bad Sun. Also called Violent Star, this fearless warrior had become the support of his old father, a champion of his causes. Like his brother Crazy Sun, he had only one eye, but his twelve rays ended sharp.

9 - Elizabeth

Elisabeth the Thunderstorm (illustration of a fantasy cloud for the novel Lunar Mythology). Andrea T. Pagano
On a planet with an always cloudless sky, one of the most typical weather events was represented by the only cloud system of its atmosphere: Elisabeth the Thunderstorm.
As great as a hurricane, threatening black-coloured, it moved at a very high speed across the planet, then dwelling here or there in the sky.
It was during the third year of the great harmony within peoples that Elisabeth the Thunderstorm caused the spark of a inevitable conflict to shoot.
Too different, each passing day, the two nations had went on revealing; the mutual intolerances were unspoken, but everyone knew that this wouldn't have lasted so much longer. The character of every people did not delay to appear so, as soon as there occurred the opportunity.
Then it came the day when the Thunderstorm stopped above the walls of the great white city.
Just in that very situation, False Sun was coming down bringing the two aces his terrible omens. Lying on the observatory tower, the twins saw a white sickle approaching, whose outlines were confused by the blanket of clouds that covered the entire sky.
Being not able to distinguish with certainty its forms, the Aces decided to inform the population about this extraordinary case. That was a big mistake.
The Good Ones, eager for brotherhood, recognized into the unknown heavenly messenger White Moon, counselor of peace and justice, bringing them news of a confirmed reconciliation between them and the Bad Ones. The latters were still the sons of the goddess of deception and violence and basically had never borne the idea of living together with a different people in such a beautiful place. So they proclaimed war against the Good Ones, arguing that the messenger spotted by Aces, not other it was but the terrible Armed Moon.

10 - Zones

While the two people were running to arms, under the eyes of the Aces another great battle was preparing, that one fought in the heavenly regions, among the gods.
Alongside the Good Moons there had trooped Old Sun and Bad Sun, while helping Bad Moon there had went Crazy Sun.
Not all the gods however were combatants: Country Moon had went hiding himself among the fields, Marine Moon had plunged into the abyss and Maternal Spleen had found refuge by her great mother.
On the other hand, against Bad Sun, the old father and White Moon, there would have fought only Armed Moon, Crazy Sun and Bad Moon herself. The other Bad Moons had took refuge, who in the abyss, who into the most remote areas of the heavens, who, like False Sun, inside Elisabeth, fled away at the beginning of hostilities.
The first one to attack was Armed Moon, who threw her red meteor against White Moon, killing her at once. Old Sun was meanwhile fighting against his son Crazy Sun, who had lost a lot of energy because of the blows of his father. It was Bad Moon to come in his rescue, taking away the star from of the impetus of the old but vigorous father. Suddenly Old Sun realized he was alone against an attack by Armed Moon. The first meteor was hurled from the sun, but the moon dodged the blow and she immediately stabbed the ancient star. She was about to finish him when, with a frightening shout, Violent Star appeared.
He had just made Bad Moon running away wounded when he noticed that his father was in difficulties. Both uninjured, the celestial warriors fought in the decisive battle. Full of energy, Bad Sun launched a heavy meteor against Armed Moon, which was hit. Desperately trying to escape she turned herself and was killed by a final discharge.
With various events another battle had taken place, down into the city. The Bad Ones had been defeated and waited their punishisment to be defined to the Aces.
Old Sun committed the decision to Bad Sun, who decreed the Bad Ones to be confined, together with their Gods, into the bottom of the abyss.
As the Green Messiah heard that, unable to bear his pain, killed himself.

11 - Hell

Theory of love

According to the theory of love the most sincere feeling for a mutual benefit can arise only within persons belonging to the same race, where one or the other part could recognize common memories and ancient parts of themselves.
The two Aces belonged to the heavenly race and a powerful bond between them was born, a sincere and deep friendship that had kept them out of the conflict, although rivals.
The thought of parting from that brother of his had upset the mind of the young Green Messiah; so he had decided to give up with his life to live longer in the memory of the White Messiah who, in memento of his brother wrote an epitaph on his tomb:

We are not terrestrials,
We are transcendent.
We are like a jar with two ears
On the ears there are points and lines
So that they draw two faces.
So there, those two faces it is us.
OC - The Pot of the Aces (illustration of a fantasy pot for the novel Lunar Mythology)

While the White Messiah was writhing in his grief, the people of the Bad Ones was preparing to bid forever farewell to the light, going down into the abyss.
The Good Ones rebuilt the city that was devastated by the fightings and called it "Mo-Mo" which in their language meant "Life"; they provided it with circular walls, such as the life-cycle "so that the round mother moon knew that there, her people adored her".
For the Bad Ones Mo-Mo always represented the paradise, while the Good Ones called the bottom of the abyss "Dead City" or "Red-Sky Hell" because according to the legend, the people, plunged into darkness, would have seen the purple of the sky, the depth increasing, turning into red.
The Good Ones believed that the Red-Sky Hell would have been the place where the souls of the dead would have gone after death. After the separation from the body, falling into the abyss for a year, the spirits would finally find themselves in front of a huge and deep corridor, in the bottom of which would shine a white light. The soul would instinctively walk toward the light, symbol of life, along the corridor, but passing in front of open doors along its walls; from these there would have come out Blue Moon and Crazy Moon to hit the spirit with spits and tail's strokes, representing the forbidden temptations. Coming to the end of the corridor, the soul, charged and weakened by the temptations, would not be able to get up and rise to the Fat Moon. Armed Moon would decapitate it and it would thus end into the mouth of Bad Moon, with all the other spirits.
According to this theory, called "theory of the Dead City", the souls would be awaiting the arrival of the Observer who, dying, being pure, would pass in front of the temptations remaining unscathed, finally facing the white light and saving the souls from the mouth of Bad Moon.
Together with these ones he would ascend to his mother moon, giving them eternal rest.

12 - Handland

Thousands of years passed on that planet also. New civilizations settled into Mo-Mo, new sons had Fat Moon, new enemies, new battles.
Like many other places in the universe, so this place went on evolving, for better or for worse.
Suddenly, in the purple layer, inside that infinitesimal space that is the empty cell, two universes collided. One of these was exactly that one into which this story was set.
The Fountain of Mo-Mo stopped erupting light for a period of time during which the energies of the two joined universes came balanced again. When it returned to work, there was no more trace of white walls and of the Observatory. Everything was as if nothing had happened.
The wind carried purple waves, on the sea, and yellow ones on the grass. However, new creatures in the sky had taken the place of the moons and the stars.
Many hands were taking the most absurd and contorted positions to represent the celestial entities. So new peoples, into this world of hands, began their stories.
